Dear Craig, Dirk, WG/Network members, Health and Technology sub-group
members,
I regret to advise that due to unforeseen personal circumstances, I must
cancel my trip to Cartagena. Please take note of the consequential
information for a smooth handover of my planned roles / activities in this
event:
*Dirk and Craig (Panel of financial literacy)*: I sent a request to the
participants in the *panel on financial literacy* to send in their speaker
points and presentations. Michael McCann sent in his material (and I trust
you already have a copy of it); Alejandra Diaz advised that she was going to
send in the presentation that she shares with Monique, but I have not yet
seen it (has it been sent directly to Dirk?); I have no other material. So
whoever will facilitate this session will have to do what I planned: meet
the speakers on the 1st day and coordinate the messages so ensure as best
possible interesting content and good flow.
*FX (Technology subgroup) & Eric Gerelle+ Michiel Berende*: On the
assumption that there might be a *panel discussion on the need for standards
and the consortium that has been formed to take this issue forward (MDWS)*,
may I suggest that MIA, which is a member of the Consortium, be part of this
panel. Iddo Dror will be in Cartagena and will be able to represent MIA on
this topic. We (and I) will respond on other issues that might arise, based
on email communications from FX and the subgroup.
*Valerie (Health subgroup)*: In the recent days there has been extensive
exchange on the "Mission Statement" of this subgroup, and I have circulated
my contribution to this in v.4 of the document. As some members have already
reacted, I know it reached the sub-group. I fully support the
proposals to *deal
with topics on which we can agree to do concrete fieldwork at grassroots
level, and ways to get funds to do so*. I do not think that the subgroup
should vote on any decisions, as too many members who do great work may be
absent from the meeting and should be given the possibility to voice their
preferences.
*Veronique, Craig (Network membership)*: If *membership* is based on
institutional affiliation, then I remind that MIA (and separately I) has
already advised of its desire to be candidate for the elections (if any) and
for holding a seat in the *steering group* (whatever the name of the group).
If the basis should be individual, I have advised yesterday that I wish to
remain active and have a voting voice. My opposition to levying dues is
known, and I request that no decisions should be taken on this issue at the
meeting. In an email send by Ellis yesterday, he requested an absentee
ballot or, as a fallback, nominated me as his proxy (so I could cast 2
votes). I hope you can find a way to give Ellis an absentee voting ballot,
and to Zahid as well, and if this has to be institutional, you could surely
use the affiliation of Ellis to the Actuarial Society, and for Zahid his
private consulting company (it seems the precedent has been set for this in
the case of Denis Garand). Thanks.
*Dirk (Steering committee of the MIC)*: I have been member of the *steering
committee* from its inception, and intend to continue in this role; in view
of my unfortunate and unforeseen absence this time, I requested Iddo to
represent me and MIA on the Steering Committee (should it meet), and in the
*organizers' dinner*.
I hope I have not forgotten any issue, but if I have, I will gladly stand
corrected.
Finally, on a personal note, this will be the 1st time I will be absent from
the MIC. I will miss the meeting with friends and colleagues, and will have
to reschedule some meetings with people who wished to discuss work with
me/MIA. I am glad that MIA as an institution will be participating in the
conference, and Iddo, our representative, can take over the roles of Ralf (*
presentation* and facilitating the *Impact subgroup*), the input to
the *technology
panel* on standardization and MIA's role in the consortium, on the *side
event *we will give, and manage *the desk* that will enable congress
participants to get info and make contact.
I wish the MIC to be a great success in Cartagena, and hope you will all
enjoy the event. Please feel free to contact me on any pending issues, or if
there is something I can do to help the success of the event from a
distance.
