Actuary (m/f)

Reference no.: 60101151
Integrated Experts Programme
Country and location: Ghana, Accra
Employer: National Insurance Commission

The context
The National Insurance Commission (NIC) is an autonomous institution for
regulating and monitoring the insurance sector in Ghana. Its remit
includes approving new insurance products and providers. NIC also has
the political mandate to actively support the development of the
insurance sector in Ghana, where microinsurance is playing an
increasingly important role. Ghana's economy is stable, and demand for
insurance products is on the rise as a result. It is expected that new,
innovative (micro)insurance products and providers will appear on the
market over the coming years. In this context, it is important that NIC
is able to check the risk models and pricing structure used for these
products, and issue licenses for products and providers, in order to
ensure market stability and protect consumers. NIC needs a trained
actuary with long-standing experience to help it conduct its work
effectively in line with international standards and carry out licensing
and monitoring tasks.

The tasks
You will report directly to the head of NIC and manage the actuary
division, which currently has a staff of three. Your tasks will include
setting up efficient structures in the division and encouraging staff to
work independently.
 You will be responsible for:
+ checking and issuing licenses for new life and non-life insurance
products and pension insurance policies;
+ monitoring annual financial reports of insurance companies as regards
the underwriting reserve, the reimbursement fund, legal capital and the
valuation principle;
+ developing national actuarial standards and guidelines;
+ drafting and revising internal manuals on workflow and processes;
+ undertaking comprehensive actuarial calculations;
+ training staff in actuarial processes, and encourage independent work
within the division (for example, by developing computer programmes)

Requirements
You have a degree in actuarial science or a similar qualification, with
an in-depth knowledge of risk models, product development and pricing,
and valuations of insurance obligations. You have an excellent knowledge
of spoken and written English.

Benefits offered
You will sign a contract with NIC for an initial period of two years,
based on local market conditions. Your contract may be extended. You
will report to the local employer from both a professional and
labour-legislation point of view. CIM will pay a monthly salary top-up,
and additional social benefits, making up an attractive overall salary.
