The research focuses on the following issues:
? Which area(s) is/are emphasized: Client targeting? Product adaptation?
Social
capital? Corporate social responsibility?
Our focus are emphasized on Client targeting and Product adaptation.
? Does the social performance of micro-insurance reduce the vulnerability of
inhabitants?
Of course. By my own experience in Peru and Colombia, micro insurance provides protection to low income people, allowing them to continue their lives even a catastrophe phenomenon occurs. For example, I´ve been attending of the victims of an earthquake in Pisco, Perú (August, 2007). Many of them from the basis of the social Peruvian pyramid, and had lost everything they had, but as client of a Micro financial institute, that has insured their properties, they can recovered in a short time their very little business, and get out of the total poverty.
? Is there a relationship between the business model and social performance?
The business model is the way to get to the people. You cannot offer a microinsurance without a well constructed business model, as premium are so small, you cannot do a thing twice. Also, the model has to be oriented to a very good service quality (your clients are VIP and you have to treat them in that way).
? What are the strengths and weaknesses of each model? Which factors should
be underscored to ensure micro-insurance yields the best social performance?
The model that best improve microinsurance performance is the one that make access to insurance very simple and easy to understand, that pays coverage in a very short time, has no exclusions or they are so small and have a very good client service. The other thing is that microinsurance must not be a gift, because people do not appreciate it if they don´t pay for it. Microinsurance is not a "little insurance" as many people think. It has to have the proper benefits to the low income people and not more or less than that. The model must have a good way to collect primes and to pay benefits. Once a low income people gets a Microinsurance, the experience that he/she takes is very important, not only for him/her, but for his/her community.
